ABOUT OUR HISTORY

Grace United Methodist Church was established somewhere between the years of 1865—1867.  During this time white missionaries under the direction of the Freedmen’s Aid Society traveled south to establish schools and houses of worship for the Negro Slaves who had recently found their freedom in 1863, after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.

Records from the church files support the existence of Grace United Methodist Church as early as 1867.  These records contain documents showing that Grace was a member of the Old Georgia Annual Conference.  Indicating the same are other existing documents such as a mortgage certificate for the amount of $250.00 signed by the Trustees of Grace United Methodist Church in 1867.  Signatures on this mortgage certificate are Jesse Hendrix, Arnold Wright and one other individual whose name was not readable.  These gentle singed as Trustees of the church.

The Georgia Annual Conference Journal established the fact that Grace has always been one of its leading churches, having had the distinction of being served by many of the great ministers of the conference.  The fifth session of the Georgia Annual Conference was held in Covington, Georgia at Grace United Methodist Church in 1880.  Bishop Foster presided and Reverend C. O. Fisher was the secretary.  The conference was composed of 78 ministries and 11,092 members.  Again, Grace hosted the 8th session of the Georgia Annual Conference held on January 19, 1883.  Bishop Joyce presided and Reverend M. C. B. Mason served as secretary.  The conference at this time had 124 ministers and 18,390 members.

Much time has passed and much history continues to be developed through the families, members and community associated with Grace United Methodist Church.  The Church continues to grow and play a significant role in the Community of Covington, Georgia and Newton County.

As a church family we continue to thank God for our house of worship. We are committed to growing the kingdom of God and reaching out to our Families and Community while developing disciples of Jesus Christ.
